Changing Skin? Olay Pro-x to the Rescue

Olay Anti-aging starter kit

I started my skincare regimen at 23 years old. I wanted to get ahead of the curve.  Some people told me I didn't need it. Others said it was a waste of money at that age.  I've been fairly pleased with my skin up until recently then suddenly everything changed.  I started to develop more acne than when I was a teenager. My skin was dry in some places and oily in others. It was, for me, a skincare nightmare because I had never experienced such issues.  On top of all of that, my skin began to age with crows feet, laugh lines, and wrinkles in my forehead. Oh No! The face in the mirror was quite a few years older than the spirit within. That's when I started my search for a new skincare regimen.

Over the years I've used Mary Kay, Lancome, Clinique, Sei Bella, and Neutrogena full skincare lines. I've also tried a number of ancillary "miracle" products from various brands. Most recently I was pleased with Arbonne RE9 and was sold on it for life. Then I turned the big four-OH and my skin changed. So, my skincare regimen needed to change too. That's when I found Olay Professional Rx.

I'll admit, I'm quite the beauty snob. I don't use products that you can get anywhere.  The only reason I used Neutrogena is because I used to work for Johnson & Johnson, otherwise I'm strictly a counter cosmetics girl i.e., MAC, NARS, BB.  However, as my skin changed so did my snobby attitude towards "store" brands.  I did my research and saw that Olay produced an anti-aging skincare line that was available "everywhere".  I went to my local Target (my Fave!) and bought the products. Contrary to my prior opinion, they weren't exactly cheap- $165 for the anti-aging and cleansing lines. So, I felt like I was getting a pretty good product.  The claims were out there, but we can all make claims. Right?  True. But I will say, that after consistently using the Olay Pro Rx line my skin came back to life.  AND after it did, I got a little relaxed on my nighttime regimen. Guess what? My skin got dull and it broke out again. So back to consistency I went.

Olay Professional Rx anti-aging line gets 4/5 stars from me with the potential to upgrade to 5 stars if I still love it in a few months.  I can visibly see a difference in the fine lines on my face. My forehead looks tighter and firmer. The lines around my eyes are smoother, though still visible. Score! Live brings plenty of changes. You gotta flow with it. Just be consistent.

Arizona's Canyon Ranch-Health, Wellness & QT

The one thing about having a traveling lifestyle is that you can figure out what you like and don't like really quickly.  Every now and then something comes along that you absolutely love. For me, it's a destination spa.  I never ever EVER go on vacation without heading to the spa for a day of relaxation and rejuvenation. Whether I'm on Hilton Head Island or in Punta Cana I can find a guy with a great pair of hands that melts my tension away.  If you enjoy the day spa experience you will fall head over heels in love with the destination spa. My personal favorite is Canyon Ranch in Tuscon Arizona.  The tranquility and self reflective time always does me well.  The surroundings will have you awestruck and if you don't believe God created the earth...you will when you leave there. It's amazing.

At Canyon Ranch you don't just get a massage. You get "advanced restorative touch therapies".  How's that for melting away the stress of being fabulous?  The spa is 80,000 square feet and offers everything you need for both active and leisurely choices. I like to start my day with Pilates then rest up awhile in my private relaxation room. In the afternoon I kick it up a notch with a dance class to see if I still got it...and I do.  Then I close it out with spa services that allow me to wind down for the evening before heading to the Health and Healing center-which by the way- has a sleep lab for all you people that are living as fabulous but sleep deprived beauties.

One of my favorite things about CR is the nutrition program. Healthy eating is a must. If you don't sleep and rarely have time to eat then what you put inside your body is extremely important. High fiber, low salts, healthy fats are on the menu for you to enjoy.  Eating meals alone lends time for reflection and renewal. I mean, how often do you get to sit down and enjoy a quiet meal allowing your palate to really sense the flavor?

Canyon Ranch is a place to re-center those things that life, work, and family have knocked around a bit.  It's a place for introspection and enjoyment of being YOU.  There is one teeny tiny thing I'd change about the ranch. After all of that cathartic reflection it would be great to have a cosmo, but Canyon Ranch is an alcohol-free environment. So, if you need to, you better detox before you go.

My Newest Obession: Mixed Chicks

When I find a product I love I shout it to the rooftops. You've heard how much I love the maxiglide because I can keep my naturally curly hair and still play it straight when I want to be sleek. Now there's another bottle in my hair arsenal.  (I know you have one, too). It's Mixed Chicks !!!   Love your naturally curly hair and want a product that you can use without the drama? This is it.

Mixed Chicks was created by Wendi Levy and Kim Etheridge. They have successfully created ONE product for my hair. You heard me...one product. Bye Bye to the hair milk, elixir, leave-in conditioner regimen before I head out dancing. It's one product. One!  The leave-in conditioner and styling cream are all in one product. Can I get an Amen!!!  Hop out of the shower, rub it through my hair, and I'm on my way to the party.

Be a Star in Las Vegas Hotels

Las Vegas is one of the most popular movie set locations in the world. There have been hundreds of movies filmed in the hotels on the Las Vegas strip.  My first trip to the Bellagio was met with alternate exits and blocked elevators because of the filming of Ocean’s Eleven.  I caught a glimpse of the late Bernie Mac in his black jack table scene and saw Julia Roberts glide down the stairwell.  After that I was hooked on the star power of the Vegas strip.

If you are a fan of "Entourage" then you've seen the guys hanging at Caesar's Palace on the HBO series.  Remember the casino scene in "Rain Man"? Yep, it was Caesar's Palace. Most recently Caesar's Palace star power shined in "The Hangover"-a movie centered around three groomsmen and a Las Vegas bachelor party.  If you were around the hotel during filming you would have seen funny man Will Ferrell in the lobby, by the pool, or the front drive of Caesar's Palace.

In 1993 Woody Harrelson made his "Indecent Proposal" to Demi Moore in the lobby of the Las Vegas Hilton.  This was not the first time nice hotel on the older end of the strip made it to the big screen. In 1971, at the tender age of two years old, the Las Vegas Hilton was the site for the James Bond movie, "Diamonds are Forever". A popular location for corporate meetings, the Hilton is located right across the street from the Las Vegas Convention Center.  Since its on the older less fabulous side of the strip, you probably won't find any current movies shooting in the lobby.

"Rat Race" was filmed at the Venetian.  "Miss Congeniality 2" was set at Treasure Island.  The most prominent area for shooting hotel movies is the pool. The Bally's pool is no different.  Bally's Las Vegas hosted Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicholas Cage in "Honeymoon in Las Vegas".    Poetic!

RIU Hotels: Always Fabulous in Jamaica

Email |
By Kamryn Adams · September 20, 2009 · 0 Comments ·

I go to Jamaica at least once a year.  It is truly one of my favorite places in the world.  It's as beautiful as any place in the Caribbean and it's just a three hour flight from Newark.  When I want a little Caribbean Jerk and Rum Punch, a week in Jamaica is a no brainer.  I've stayed at a number of properties on the island from Negril to Runaway Bay.

If it's your first time to JamRock you may be a bit shocked when you get off of the airplane. At first glance it's not the cleanest Island in the blue sea. The car ride from Montego Bay to either Ocho Rios or Negril has plenty of "unvacation" sites to see.  However, when it comes to resorts -Jamaica has some of the most beautiful and cleanest resorts in the Caribbean.  My Favorites are the Riu All-InclusiveResorts. All include the typical AI resort amenities like a gym, salon, small casino, and private beach but each Jamaican Riu has it own distinct personality.

A lot of all-inclusive hotels offer unlimited amounts of mediocre food and mid quality drinks. Riu-Negril is known as having some of the best all-inclusive cuisineon the Island. The Negril property is a "Club Riu" hotel which means that there is plenty to do and the atmosphere is very appropriate for both a girl’s weekend or a romantic week with your sugar baby.  If you can handle the hour-and-a-half ride from the airport in Montego Bay, it will be well worth your trip.  It's a big resort so make sure your diamond studded flip flops are comfortable. You may have a rather long walk  to your room.

Riu, Montego Bayis a brand new resort. When I first arrived the staff was a little out of sorts. The service was not as accommodating as the Negril property because it's right in Montego Bay.  It's crowded and compact, so wear your diamond studded flip flops all day if you want.  True to all Riu hotels there is that perfectly placed mini-bar in your room that helps when you need to get away from it all.  It's included in your all-inclusive plan.

To me, Ocho Rios is the cruise crew destination of the island.  It's the side of the island that the cruise ships come into and allow anxious duty-free shoppers to disembark. Because of this Riu-Ocho Rios is the least crowded of the Riu hotels on the Island.  A short cab ride away from port, hotel guests can go to the shopping village and get the same great deals as the cruise crew.  It's a little more low key than Fabulous but it definitely works for a few day some R&R before you ramp back up to your Fabulous life.

If you're not really up to Fabulous but want a little more luxury instead, then you can head back to Negril to Riu Palace-Tropical Bay.  It's not a "club" hotel so there is less party and more “plush”.  Definitely considered one of the best all-inclusives in the entire Caribbean, you get top shelf liquor and nightly turn down service.  The crowd was a little too old for me and much too quiet, but it was definitely a more luxurious experience than at Ocho Rios with a similar crowd.

Kelly Ripa in Victoria Bekham is Fabulous !!!

During my recent interview with Kelly Ripa I couldn't help but notice how fabulous she was.  I was there to talk about Kelly's Textathon for Ovarian Cancer Awareness and I certainly learned a lot. But the Fabulous chick in me couldn't help but ask "Who made that dress?"  The answer surprised me....Victoria Beckham?

Exposed zippers are the hottest trend in fall dresses and Victoria created this cute purple number with the long zipper up the back. Kind of makes it look like it's inside out but it's so cute.  The dress is feminine and purple color worked very well for Kelly. All she needed to add were her black pumps to set it all the way off.  The strapless dress made Kelly look "less like a boy" - her words not mine and accentuated her tiny curves and breasts. Not something I need to worry about, but I certainly get it for the tiny ladies out there. This dress made little Kelly Ripa look voluptuous at her size.   Hitting below the knee was the perfect length for short gals like Kelly. It gave her the allure of being long and lean- similar to what a floor length gown does for gals my height - 5'9" and fabulous!

She let me in on a few of her beauty secrets:  Showering and washing her hair at night to get an early start in the morning, sleeping on a satin pillowcase makes for minimal hair drama in the morning. As for her make-up she says, "I'm lucky my job comes with make-up otherwise..." she laughs.

I couldn't leave without a picture of the shoes and that tattoo.  Kelly Ripa is funny, smart, very community minded and a super-mom.  She's everything that Fabulous was meant to be - inside and out.  Hurray for Kelly and Kudos to Victoria for the dress!

Fabulous in Las Vegas: Planet Hollywood

By Kamryn Adams · September 2, 2009 · 0 Comments ·

I’ve stayed at just about every grand hotel on the Las Vegas Strip and each one has a certain place in my traveling heart. The Luxor is such a romantic hotel and great sense of the rich history of Egyptians. It’s also where my husband and I stayed during our wedding and on two of our anniversary trips.  Paris is romantic but needs to be updated and New York, New York is fun but needs some theme improvements.  However, if you want to experience “Fabulous” while in Las Vegas, Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino is the right choice.

First it’s perfectly located on the center strip. You can get a sleeping room with a view of the Bellagio and the spectacular water show.  It’s a nice walk in either direction to see the rest of the themed hotels on the strip.  If you want to take a break from “Fabulous” to hit “Romantic” for a while, head next door to Paris. You could also walk over to Caesar’s Palace for some shopping if you like, but you don’t have to go further than casino door of Planet Hollywood to enter the Miracle Mile Shops. Shopping on site is a “Fabulous” must on vacation.

Renovated in 2008, the clean rooms are decorated in…what else? Hollywood style memorabilia. Old movie posters and on-set memorabilia provide conversation pieces in every room of the hotel.  The maid service was excellent and they knew not to knock on the door before 12 noon. The hotel staff was extremely accommodating and they didn’t worry the heck out of you to take a time share tour. Score! for Planet Hollywood.  Oh, if you want to buy a PH apartment, you can surely find a rep to sell to you, but they aren’t stalking you in the doorways.

Because Planet Hollywood is THE place to stay in Las Vegas, the music piping throughout the hotel and casino is, in my humble hip hop opinion, incredible. It’s hot. It’s fresh. It’s full of energy at every corner of the hotel.  The Extra lounge in the hotel is a good place to hang out and star gaze. But remember, you’re fabulous so don’t go bothering Shaq on his vacation. Just give him the fabulous nod and keep moving to one of the hip restaurants on site, including  Martini Toppling PF Chang’s right inside the hotel.

Oh, and for the gamblers…the machines aren’t tight. Winners were happy and losers were confident they could win. It makes for a fun time for all.  After you cash in, sashay to one of the hot spots in the hotel: The Heart Bar, Prive (Night Club), or The Playing Field lounge for a good time.

Versatility is the Key to Fabulous Hair- The Maxiglide

I don't get paid to endorse the Maxiglide but I could.  Maxiglide gives curly gals fab freedom but adding versatility to our styling options. If you love your naturally curly/wavy hair, you probably don't want to put any type of straightening chemical in it. Relaxers, Texturizers, and Japaneses Straightening processes will change the curl pattern of your natural hair. So, your hair will be straight but when you decide to wear it curly it won't look the same. Maxiglide by Maxius Beauty gives you the versatility to wear your hair in seek updo or a free-form curly - all in the same day, if you like.

I've been using the Maxiglide for almost three years and I love it. It holds up very well. I use it at least three times a week and it's still in great operating shape. If and when it burns out I'll replace it in a Fabulous New York minute. The results speak volumes. (Pun intended!)

Lunch with Girlfriends says "Fabulous" every time

Email |
By Kamryn Adams · July 27, 2009 · 0 Comments ·

There are few things that are better for my soul and psyche than lunch with my girls.  I have two "sets" of girlfriends that break bread with me.  One group is a quartet of  business owners that can understand what it's like to be happy, hungry, and on the entrepreneurial grind.  We share the ups and downs of business, life, and how great it is to buy a new Coakley bag when you score a big contract.  We cheer our success and advise on how to move forward with our lives and business goals. When I leave these ladies I'm usually humming, "I believe I can fly".

The other group of gals are my Dazzling Diva, sista girls, all for one and one for all, doing our own things but cheering each other collectively gathering of girlfriends. We sip tea, drink woo woos and basically tell each other, "girl you are too fabulous".   When I dine with these ladies, I walk away feeling like a million bucks. They encourage me to believe that I can do anything, be anything, and say anything that comes to my mind.  Our commonality is not business, or motherhood, or life circumstance. Our commonality is simply being women who believe in the positive energy to love and support each other no matter what it is you want to do.

If you have a group of women in your life that provide you with such love and support, you should have a set time on the calendar to "do lunch" or have a "girls night out".  Of course, if you are fabulous gals then it will take two weeks to settle on a firm date when everyone can make it. But when you do finally get that date, it will be a blast.  I swear my hair, nails, and skin are more healthy after I've had some time with my girlfriends.  We talk about everything...serious and silly.  The most important thing about my "gal getters" is that we are genuine in our concern for each other.  We don't talk about the person who goes to the bathroom or gets up to check voice mail. There is only one rule to having lunch with girlfriends and that's BE POSITIVE.

So call up your girls and meet them for bite to eat. Tell 'em Kamryn sent you.

ABsolutely Fabulous with Pilates

Pilates is not only the fabulous thing to do for phenomenal summer abs, it's effective. I recommend GAIAM Target Body Absworkout DVD. It includes a 30-minute pilates workout coupled with a 30-minute yoga workout. That's 60 minutes focused totally on developing your abdominal muscles. Forget about the silly infomercial gadgets and the boring chore of doing a thousand crunches a day. Pilates is hip and effective! Pilates develops core strength and you'll see a change in your posture, which will make you look Hollywood lean.

If you don't have time for a full 60-minute workout here are some of my favorite pilates exercises on the go.  Flab and Fabulous don't work together so get on the floor to Rock and Roll!

The Boat Pose & Double Leg Rock

Raise your legs in a "V" shape and hold at your ankles. If you are just beginning and can't reach your ankles you can hold behind your calf muscles. Don't sit flat.  Make sure the entire extension of your legs is in the upward position. Balance on your the top of your glutes, just below your tail bone.  Hold the position, using your abdominal strength.  To go into the double leg rock, rock backwards rolling your spine one vertebrae at a time...which means slow and controlled. Use your abs to return to the Boat Pose. Hold it!  Now start again.

The EGG ROLL- Rolling in a Ball

Bring your knees into your chest and hold yourself in a ball. Without letting go of your legs, roll backwards while exhaling. Then, return to the starting position while inhaling. Be sure not to let your feet rock back to touching the floor. The key is to have your abdominal muscles control the movement.
